Heroine

The remains of an unidentified ship (possibly one called the Heroine) can be seen scattered on the seabed in 10-18 m (below chart datum) on the northern side of Seal Rock, off Lundy’s north east tip. The wreckage consists of fragmented metal frames and hull plating lying on an undulating seabed of granite boulders with the site being swept by strong currents. From the materials used in construction of this vessel, it is reasonable to assume that the vessel dates from the mid 19th or early 20th centuries.

SS Salado (1897) & Barge Rover (1898)

The SS Salado was a steam-powered, steel-built cargo ship which struck the Mouse Hole and Trap in fog during March 1897. The ship was carrying a cargo of coal and there were twenty-five people on board. The wreck is located close inshore in 7-10 m of water on an undulating seabed of granite boulders. All that remains of the ship are some steel hull plates and frames, together with some remains of the ship's coal cargo. The hull is extremely broken up. It was estimated that approximately 20% of the ship remained in 1994 (Robertson, 1994).

The barge Rover was carrying out salvage work on the wreck of the Salado when she too sank in a position adjacent to the Salado wreck.

MV Amstelstroom (1948)

The Dutch ship MV Amstelstroom, a coaster of 395 tons, was stranded on rocks in fog on 18th July 1948. This wreck is located close inshore below Battery Point off Lundy’s west coast in 12-15 m of water, within a complex gully system of granite boulders. The remains lie above and below the kelp line. They are extremely scattered (the site experiences high energy due to tidal surge and wave damage) and consist of fragmented metal hull plating with rivet fastening, and various metal objects from the ship’s deck structure, such as winches, an anchor and anchor chain. In 1994, a survey estimated that approximately 15-30% of the ship is thought to remain but some more of the hull may be buried under granite stones.
