The Lundy Marine Protected Area
2014
The title of 'Marine Protected Area' came about following a suggestion by the then Lundy Warden Beccy MacDonald to provide one over-arching title which encompassed all the other marine designations. It was becoming confusing to her and others, on occasion, as to which designation was being referred to.
The Lundy MCZ Advisory Group (formerly the Lundy MNR Advisory Group, and before that the Lundy Marine Consultation Group) adopted this proposal at their meeting on 2nd April 2014. The proposal was then formally agreed by the Lundy Management Forum which met the following day on 3rd April 2014. As a consequence, the group underwent another name change to the Lundy MPA Advisory Group.
The term ‘Marine Protected Area’ is a term which may include various sizes, forms and levels of protection, which is acknowledged throughout the world.
The Lundy MPA includes the designated areas of the Lundy MCZ, Lundy SAC, Lundy No Take Zone and the foreshore/intertidal area of the Lundy SSSI.
The Lundy MPA is included within the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere and the Bristol Channel Approaches SAC.
