The Bristol Channel Approaches Special Area of Conservation

2019

Designated in February 2019, the Bristol Channel Approaches SAC stretches across the Outer Bristol Channel, from the north coast of Cornwall to Carmarthen Bay in south Wales, covering an area of 5,850 km2. Responsibility for the SAC is shared by Natural England and by Natural Resources Wales.

The sole nominated feature of the site is the harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena. The SAC has been identified as a winter area of importance for the Celtic and Irish Sea Management Unit for the harbour porpoise.

This SAC includes the Lundy MPA (and thus the Lundy SAC) within its boundaries.

Further details about the Bristol Channel Approaches Special Area of Conservation can be found on the JNCC website.
